Tedros said that countries should achieve the 70% vaccination coverage target set by WHO as soon as possible, while giving priority to vaccinating all health workers, over 60 years old and other high-risk groups; all countries should maintain epidemic monitoring and genetic sequencing work and be prepared to reintroduce and adapt public health and social measures to the outbreak as necessary.
The Covid-19 pandemic is not the only crisis facing the world today. With the theme of “Health for Peace, Peace for Health”, the conference will discuss humanitarian crises in countries such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen.
According to WHO data, this year alone, WHO has verified 373 attacks on health facilities or personnel in 14 countries and territories, killing 154 health workers and patients and injuring 131. “The attack on health workers and facilities violates international humanitarian law and is an attack on the right to health,” Tedros said.
This 7-day assembly is expected to be one of the WHA with the largest number of topics discussed and resolutions passed. The General Assembly will also elect a new WHO Director-General, of which Tedros is currently the only candidate.
